carmen_lj: (river; unicorns and rainbows)
I've seen this in a couple of reviews on ye olde flist so, as I am just too lazy to copy and paste the same comment, Crimson Horror question )
carmen_lj: (river; unicorns and rainbows)
Bloody hell, Mark Gatiss, BLOODY HELL. It is a bit like he had a list of all the things I judge about his eps and decided SOD IT I AM GOING TO PROVE YOU WRONG, RANDOM INTERNET PERSON. PS I SHALL BE DOING IT WHILE STICKING TO MY TRIED AND TESTED FORMULA OF PRETENDING I'M WRITING SEVENTIES WHO.

The Crimson Horror )

Incidently, female marriages were an accepted thing in Victorian Britain. History ain't a constant march upwards to ever more progressive times: the recognised gay marriages of the 19th century were anathema through much of the 20th.
carmen_lj: (river; unicorns and rainbows)
I thought Hide was smashing, and possibly that Neil Cross had delivered his script and said "look guys, I'm REALLY SORRY, but I kind of forgot we're making Doctor Who in the twenty-first century and wrote a top-notch seventies adventure featuring UNIT instead. THAT'S OKAY, RIGHT?" and Moffat said, "Yes, of course, I shall make one or two adjustments and everything will be great." And it was.

Onwards! To the marvellously titled Who of last week, yes:

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS )
carmen_lj: (eleven; mine is the floppy hair)
I was A BIT NERVOUS about this ep not meeting my e'er so slight expectations what with some actors I think are great (Liam Cunningham and Tobias Menzies), a SUBMARINE, and beautiful old skool monsters.

Cold War )
carmen_lj: (babs/ian; never stop running)
I bloody loved this, and I've the horrid desire to write meta about it.

The Rings of Akhenaten )
carmen_lj: (eleven; not a mad professor)
OH DOCTOR WHO WAS ON. And I did not write a post. SHOCKING. Anyway, just to add to the shock, I loved it. I know, it's astonishing, there is Matt Smith on the telly being the Doctor and I am aflail with glee. HOW TERRIBLY UNEXPECTED.

The Bells of St John )
carmen_lj: (eleven; mine is the floppy hair)
OH HAI. So there was a Doctor Who Christmas Special on the telly and it was AMAZING and PERFECT and BEAUTIFUL and I LOVED IT. And here are my thoughts on it I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM though many seem to come down to OMG I LOVED THAT. So, yes:

Doctor Who The Snowmen )
carmen_lj: (freema; freematastic yo)
So if Ian McKellen is voicing the Snowmen in this year's Christmas Special MAYBE he and Derek Jacobi could be at next year's Gally and just be on stage the whole time talking to each other. JUST AN IDEA.

I've changed my mind about what episode I want back most in the archives: it's currently The Abominable Snowmen, episode six. Cause it was the MOST MAGICAL END EVER to a Doctor Who story. The Yeti in the Himalayas have turned out to be robots controlled by the Great Intelligence - a standard Doctor Who plot thing where something mythical turns out to be ALIENS DID IT - but right at the very end the intrepid explorer dude who's come to the Himalayas to search for Yetis has found only DEATH AND ALIENS and had his belief in the Yeti CRUELLY DESTROYED. Except then he spots one, a real one. THERE IS MAGIC IN THE WORLD AFTER ALL.

I have been to the Americas and returned safely. I DID NOT get attacked by any Giant Weeping Angels, Statue of Liberty shaped or otherwise, in New York. DISAPPOINTING. I did get a bit of a headache in Times Square. DEATH BY NEON LIGHT, DUDES.
carmen_lj: (eleven; sonic in your mouth)
Y'know, I'm not sure...not *entirely* sure...but I *think* someone just might be MOCKING FANDOM in the opener to this mini-episode:

"The Doctor has just said goodbye...to Amelia Pond, the woman who will never be replaced in his hearts," says Matt Smith.

*camera pulls back*

"Hi!" says Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Here it is, and even unequivocably legal! It's a BBC upload to Youtube:

my exciting reviewishness )

And then there was a trailer for the Christmas ep:

things I thought )
carmen_lj: (eleven; night on the town)
New Doctor Who on Friday! Undoubtedly not very much, but it's nice to have. A prologue (NOT A PREQUEL, BBC SITE) to this year's Christmas Special, and a preview of the Special, or, as we generally call them, an advert. STILL. Looking forward QUITE A LOT to this Christmas Special, both for The Latest One and due to shiny, shiny guest stars.

I am, however, going HMM at this publicity shot of the Doctor. STOP LOOKING AT ME WITH YOUR NARROWED EYES AND GLOOMY COSTUME, DOCTOR. MORE CHEER PLEASE.

There was also a thing about Neil Gaiman writing another episode and monster spoiler, but good luck not being spoiled before it's on )

I saw the trailer for the final season of Spartacus, WAR OF THE DAMNED, and it was awesome. It's just shot after shot of ridic OTT violence with ridic OTT blood. I'm relatively squeamish, but find the violence in Spartacus so cartoonish it never squicks me. BUT OH THE SPARTACUS DUDES I LOVE THEM. Even though they killed some of them and I DID NOT APPROVE. And they've taken away Lucretia and Ilithyia and their beautiful, perfect friendship of LIES AND BETRAYAL. But Crixus and Naevia are all alive and well and emotionally well-balanced I'm sure, and are going to have a heartwarming ending of happiness. Yes.

So, what this actually means for the Ponds is that cut for spoilers )
carmen_lj: (amy; team tardis with top hats)
Right. Well. This is it. I'm scared. Scared, people. I don't want to cry too much. I mean, *of course* I'm not going to cry, but y'know.

The Angels Take Manhattan )

In a word: magnifique.

Ooh, a Christmas trailer!
carmen_lj: (amy; happy as a sunflower)
Right, so this is my theory: aliens have kidnapped Chris Chibnall and replaced him with some alien clone-like thing who's been made to write Doctor Who stories that pander to me. Because omg. This season has been great. One I've enjoyed, one I've thought smashing and now two Chibnalls (Chibnalls ffs - everyone remembers Cyberwoman, right?) to which my reaction is of the OMG TELLY HOW SO PERFECT AND WONDERFUL?! variety.

So, yeah, liked it.

The Power of Three )
carmen_lj: (amy; tell yourself no lies)
Ah, sci-fi doing Westerns. The sort of thing I feel like I shouldn't like given the whole 'Western' aspect but, actually, The Gunfighters, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Back To The Future 3, Spectre of the Gun: smashing. Not A Fistful of Datas though. That's shit.

Anyway, A Town Called Mercy:

Stuff I Loved )

Doctor Who and The Ends Justifying The Means )

TLDR: Good episode. Asked some questions about war, morality and violence that I very much enjoyed. Didn't like the Lonely God bullshit briefly popping up, did love the Proper Doctor bits.
carmen_lj: (amy; happy as a sunflower)
OMG DOCTOR WHO OMG OMG OMG. I spent that whole episode trying my best not to squee, which I haven't done for a while because I have dignity, dammit, but basically there was about a thing a minute where I wanted to wave my hands and go "OMGOMG LOVE."

So, yeah, I liked it.

Dinosaurs On A Spaceship )

Who trailer

TWO THUMBS UP. trailer spoilers, yo )

Yeah, so quite looking forward to the new series.
carmen_lj: (com; no it is we who are jerkfaces)
I was doing SO WELL at updating for at least five minutes. And now I haven't updated for a week and I don't even know what I've been doing for the last week. It is like time gobbled it up and all I can remember is a lot of feeling V SORRY FOR SELF at not being able to sleep properly.

I did finish Portal 2 though. That was awesome. Everyone should play it and then wear t-shirts with quotes from it on them and then when I see you I will know you are an awesome person. I keep looking at all the merchandise on Thinkgeek and coveting and am just about to give up and get the turret plushie. Though what I reall want is a GLaDOS potato plushie that yells abuse at birds. They haven't made one of those. YET.

Saw ALL OF COMMUNITY a wee bit ago and failed to say anthing about that SHOCKINGLY. Especially as it was Just Lovely and Made Me Happy. There was Britta & Jeff being Jerkfaces, there was Jeff being Ultra-Jerkface WHILST SHIRTLESS which was very pandering to my interests, Shirley got A PROPER STORYLINE OF GOODNESS and wanting a business and having a business and doing business things and quite a lack of being offputtingly judgemental AND THAT WAS GREAT, and Pierce seemed to make like the tiniest step towards not being a fuckwit and that was well done, and Troy and Abed and Annie I draw wee hearts around them in all their domestic fantasticness.

I LOVE BRITTA. She got to be Not The Worst at psychology and that was QUITE LOVELY. But mostly I love her being The Worst (even though she clearly isn't).

Also there was an episode that I can only assume was stolen from my brain and then rewritten to make it proper good and stuff. I SPEAK OF THE COMPUTER GAME EPISODE. As soon as it was clear that, yes, there was going to be a single half-assed set and then THE WHOLE EPISODE WAS WATCHING PEOPLE PLAY A FICTIONAL COMPUTER GAME I may have made little Fists Of Joy like a wee toddler clutching their favourite toy. EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT. The graphics and gameplay and humour and MUSIC OH THE MUSIC. The nostalgia was great and I maybe reinstalled my DOS box in some vague ambition to play Commander Keen.

Another promo pic of the Doctor and The Latest One. My impressions: omg that is a lot of tweed; I hope the Doctor has taken up origami, I'm going to pretend that's true for now and some Alien Menace is foiled by the application of an origami water balloon (which I was banned from making as Wee Child; it was art, dammit! Art!)

Cadfael is smashing but it really is less smashing when Sean Pertwee isn't playing Beringar.
carmen_lj: (amy; seeing things very clearly)
Here is a lovely picture of Eleventy and The Latest One from the Beeb:

THERE ARE NO PONDS IN IT. This is just like that time Big Finish wrote out Erimem and I never listened to another Fifth Doctor audio ever again.* I don't like this Not Wanting Companions To Leave thing. IT MAKES ME SAD. Even if I'm looking forward to the next one. SADNESSES.

Also, no longer Scottish. That's the worst thing really.
