carmen_lj: (river; set yourself on fire)
I have been doing this meme SO WELL. That is how FULL OF JOY I am, anyway:

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.

2. Do this every day for eight days.

Due to skipping of like a week, here be more than one thing:

1 - PETER CUSHING'S HEAD. Omg. Someone has made Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin's head and it's so TERRIFYINGLY EERIE I kinda wonder if they built a time-machine instead, popped back and lopped it off. Except that's gross and surely if you had a time-machine the first thing you'd do is go back and rescue sixties Doctor Who? And I still haven't seen Marco Polo so that's UNPOSSIBLE.

2 - Anyone on teh flist who's posted about the new X-men movie as y'all seem to share my priorities, and there's only been GOOD THINGS SAID on the Magneto/Xavier front, so hurrah.

3 - PIRATES. I am going to see Pirates tonight and as My Expectations are basically the presence of Geoffrey Rush, and I know FOR A FACT he's in it, it'll probably be Not Too Shabby.

4 - This is a lovely post about all the things I like about The Almost People. Also there are pictures, LOVELY PICTURE GRAPHIC THINGIES, including a smashing one of my Very Favourite Thing about the episode.

6 - Doctor/TARDIS vid, omg, it are beautiful.

carmen_lj: (mi; zomg demon chicken!)
Give me a character and I will tell you:

* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

My fandoms are ALL THE THINGS I've ever talked about.
carmen_lj: (two; old friends and soldiers)
Because icons are lovely little things, surely, yes. Good.

* Reply to this post with ICON ME! and I will pick five of your icons.
* Make a post (including this info) and talk about the icons I chose.
* Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
* This will create a never ending cycle of icon glee...

Chosen by [ profile] astrogirl2

This is an icon from a movie, possibly a short movie, called Vincent. I have never seen it. I have no idea what it's about, other than inferring stuff from this batch of icons that [ profile] fuyu_icons made years ago now it must be. BUT I LOVE THEM. They are mostly about being miserable and sad and and made me happy and also gave me a handy way to express DOOOOOM. I used to have more. This dude is the Last Survivor and also the icon I'm using that I've had the longest.

This a Romana icon from the BBCi animated remake of the partially made season 17 story Shada, except they rewrote it a bit so instead of Tom Baker, Paul McGann's playing the Doctor and the Doctor goes and picks up Romana from when she is being President on Gallifrey. The previous sentence is a beautiful illustration of why I love the Whoniverse.

Anyway, not only is this a pseudocanonical or expanded canon or whatevs you want to call it Romana, it's also from a piece of lovely Interwebs tat the BBCi folks made which is a DANCE VIDEO to Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head, that animated Romana is dancing to. Because there's a bit in the song that goes LALAALLA etc and Romana is played by Lalla Ward. I do not know what those chaps were on, but I salute them. It claims to be here, but it's not working for me, so, hrrm.

This is Eve Myles being awesome and also making a lolarious face. I am v keen on Lolarious Faces. I think I uploaded this initially cause I wanted to have some icon of Gwen/Eve Myles as there was a lot of unpleasant things being said about her and whilst I'm not VASTLY KEEN on Torchwood, I do think she's the best bit of it.

Graphics crossovers are Most Yayful. This is the TARDIS and two one of them wee ships what are in BSG The Big Fake Copy and one from SGA. I quite like to think of the TARDIS materialising in the middle of a human-Cylon battle just because it would look pretty. Also, ironic use of Shakespeare quotes are yay. (Or straight up use of Huxley being ironic, also good.) I assume reference is to BSG cause being sarky like that at the Whoniverse makes me sad, even if it occasionally it applies because they have MADE WHO WRONG. Ahem.

This is incorrect. Sometimes you have to give cheese to a lactose intolerant volcano god in order to get volcano of said volcano god to erupt and start a flow of lava to the Goodsoups' hotel place so it goes under the cauldron and melts the nacho cheese and you get...something. I forget.

Anyway, this is from The Curse of Monkey Island. The very excellent third game in the Monkey Island series. There's this bunch of vegetarian cannibals worshipping this volcano and Guybrush sneaks in with a giant piece of tofu on his head and chucks in the cheese and Lemonhead, chief of vegetarian cannibals, is well unpleased and says the line what is on the icon. Like this.
carmen_lj: (amy; omg teh prime minister)
Though the year is not over yet! I have ten days left and I will get to fifty books this year. If I have to, I'm bloody well reading Target novelisations.

Anyway, the year...I hope I can remember anything at all:

Fannish Year In Review )
carmen_lj: (amy; omg teh prime minister)
Okay, I'm going to do this, despite the fact I feel a bit silly about it and despite the fact there's a slight chance I won't be able to actually read any of the comments because I am a bit rubbish when anyone says anything nice at me ever.

Nevertheless, my thread at the Holiday Love Meme, Secret Santa style.

Suspect the fact there there are dozens of pages to look through for People What I Know will provide adequate procrastination activity for the next couple of hours. Excellent. I shall not fall back into the trap of Treasure Island. (Like Farmville, but even moar shaming, yo.)
carmen_lj: (dw; huxley never saw this)
The Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets [and comic book authors] included)* who've influenced you and that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag everyone, because I'm interested in seeing what authors my friends choose.

My dudes:

1. Frank Herbert
2. Antonia Fraser (nonfiction counts, right?)
3. WM Thackeray
4. Charlotte Bronte
5. Philip K Dick
6. Ursula Le Guin
7. Roald Dahl
8. Enid Blyton
9. Kurt Vonnegut
10. Sheri S Tepper
11. Robert Graves
12. Rosalind Miles
13. Alexandre Dumas
14. Jane Austen
15. Fydor Dostoyevsky

List includes influences from very small me, to me last week, hurrah!
carmen_lj: (rome; fight until you can't)
This is a shiny, shiny meme that makes me sad because I had six years of Lovely Historical Telly (Rome, The Tudors) and now I've got bloody Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Hmph.

[ profile] fannish5: Name five historical characters whose lives you'd like to see adapted into movies or TV series.

1) Catherine de' Medici - This is the historical telly I want more than any other by QUITE A LOT. Mostly cause Catherine was amazing, partly because she gets a bad rep that I think's pretty much undeserved. (It's not her fault one tiny little political assassination went HORRIBLY WRONG.) Anyway, she was born into a merchant family, orphaned and imprisoned at a young age, and ended up ruling France as regent for fourteen years and exerting enormous political influence for another fifteen. During this time there were the French Wars of Religion, to which Catherine constantly sought a diplomatic compromise (despite, y'know, popular history) and kept the country from plummetting full on into the abyss.

(And so it's not all about the 16th century what I love maybe too much, I'll say here I'd totally be for a telly show about Marguerite de Valois or Marie de Guise as well.)

2) Empress Matilda - there are many, many things I loved about Cadfael and one of them was the little hints there'd be about what was going on in the struggle between Matilda and Stephen. Probably this telly would be like every time I watch a Napoleon thing and hope he wins and then AM V SAD that Waterloo always ends the same way. Apart from in Blackadder.

Anyway, here there was a nineteen year conflict because Henry I decided to die and leave A GIRL IN CHARGE. Some people weren't so keen on that and decided to support some dude called Stephen instead. Matilda wasn't going quietly, thus WAR. In the end, Stephen won, but he eventually made Matilda's son his heir.

3) Theodora - Empress of Byzantine, wife of Justinian II (he who's responsible for the Corpus Iuris Civilus and thus I love him influenced all civil law legal systems of today.) Comic, mimic, strip-tease artist and prostitute, Theodora first became Justinian's mistress and then, after getting the then-emperor, his uncle Justin, to make an edict, they were permitted to marry. She's responsible for saving the Empire during the Nika revolt - Justinian wanted to flee, she insisted they stay - and fought for changes in the law to allow women more power.

4) Isabella of France - married Edward II; not the most successful marriage ever, partially due to her husband being gay bisexual and ending up with a guy who was a bit keen on having Isabella killed. Isabella wasn't big on this plan. She went off to France, met up with her own lover, Roger Mortimer, set up an alternative government-in-exile and told everyone she was a widow. Got herself an army, invaded England, had her husband and his lover captured, then executed the lover, imprisoned the husband, probably had him murdered. Had her son installed as king and ruled through him. Her son, however, thought Mortimer might be a bit too keen on his death as well, so had his mother and Mortimer captured. Mortimer got the blame for everything and was hung, Isabella was forgiven, and spent the next thirty years in nice castles, spending lots of money. A heartwarming tale.

5) Tamara of Georgia - first Queen regnant of Georgia; presided over its Golden Age. Had lolarious relationship with her first husband where she kept on exiling him and he kept on thinking what a great idea it was to raise an army and try and usurp her throne. He never succeeded and, despite having more than one opportunity, she never had him killed.

She pursued a policy of aggressive expansionism for some twenty years and had a keen knack for military strategy. Alas, while she left the kingdom prosperous and whole to her son, it all ended a bit tragically some fifty years later with her daughter running from Ghengis Khan's invasion.

A telly meme ah nicked offa [ profile] jinxed_wood. About lovely telly and stuff.

Name a TV show series in which you have seen every episode at least twice:
Oh, Doctor Who. (And recons counts, dammit.)

Name a (current) show you can't miss:
Legend of the Seeker. I'm a bit behind on most shows I'm watching at the mo, but, um, never LotS. I am only slightly ashamed. It's the swords! And maybe Craig Parker a bit.

Name an actor that would make you more inclined to watch a show:
James Purefoy.

Name an actor who would make you less likely to watch a show:
Ricky Gervais.

Name a show you can, and do, quote from.
Doctor Who. Maybe. Occasionally.

Name a show you like that no one else enjoys:
Hammer House of Horror. I'm not even sure I like it. It's dreadful. Not a single decent episode and even Peter Cushing and Brian Cox combined have not the power to save their godawful script of awfulness.

the rest of the meme, yo )
carmen_lj: (rome; atia victorious)
A shiny procrastinating meme of awesome what I nicked from [ profile] elyssadc: one hundred female characters what I love. I was v good and restrained about the Whoniverse, I think, and stopped at thirty.

100 awesome female characters )
carmen_lj: (martha; in my stars you know)
[ profile] sarah531 v kindly linked me to apocryphal Martha sword fighting. WELL DONE APOCRYPHA I SHALL NEVER SPEAK ILL OF YOU AGAIN. Unless you are an NA...or The Axis of Insanity, in which case it's your own fault for making my eyes and/or ears hurt with awfulness.

And because there is like no-one on my flist who's not done this yet and thus I am a v slow sheep:

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a new post. Pictures will appear if appropriate and I ain't being lazy.
carmen_lj: (babs; pretty as a picture)
A meme what I have stolen from [ profile] astrogirl2.

Choose your genre show, answer the questions using episode titles from that show - if possible, don't repeat any.

My Life According to Doctor Who )
carmen_lj: (romana ii; fought the war)
A meme, yes:

Name fifteen favorite fannish pairings (het/slash/canon/fanon), and ask people if they notice any common traits/tendencies in the pairings you choose. Try to pick different fandoms.

In the order which they come to mind:

1) Romana/Doctor, Doctor Who
2) Sapphire/Steel, Sapphire and Steel
3) Becky Sharp/Rawdon Crawley, Vanity Fair
4) Jane Eyre/Mr Rochester, Jane Eyre
5) Uhura/Spock, STXI
6) Janeway/Kashyk, Star Trek Voyager
7) Uther/Morgana, Merlin
8) Peri/Erimem, Doctor Who
9) Doctor/Master, Doctor Who
10) Gene/Alex, A2A
11) Blake/Avon, Blake's 7
12) Talia/Ivanova, Babylon 5
13) Xavier/Magneto, X-men
14) Babs/Ian, Doctor Who
15) Ancelyn/Bambera, Doctor Who

My oh-so-exciting conclusions: antagonism is a sound basis for yayful pairings, but even better is when they work together and have snarky banter. I like pairings to be clever and competitive and to consist of independant, competent people...for a definition of competent that doesn't include Being Good At Conquering The World and Not Being Crazy in certain cases.

carmen_lj: (dw - ten&rose&vespa like woah)
Yes! The Post Office has delivered my DVD-Rs, so I can now get all the junk off my computer and have SPACE. Very exciting. And I can organise it all and write things on them and be ORGANISED. Recons! Like the Beeb did not quite burn Two properly! Oh, oh, it makes me happy like woah, yes.

Also, I have nothing to do except transfer files for a while, so to ease the tedium, and from many people on flist:

Ask Me My Fandom Opinion

How this works:
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Ask anything...I'm really not bothered.
2. ONE DAMN QUESTION.-- Nah, you can ask more than one, but I might or might not answer it.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.
carmen_lj: (cod - ghani spoil of war)
One word in that title is a fib, but since I have swapped the daylight hours for the dark ones and have not even a cat to talk to right now, I answer these questions, yes.

Fic Writing Meme Type Thing )

My sister has my XBox. She has had it for, like, A Year now. I would quite like it back. Or she could buy me a 360. Which would be dead nice, oh yes. Also it would avoid me selling out to Microsoft, um, again. (Though I do not have guilt about my XBox for it was second-hand with a whacking great discount due to me Actually Having A Job at the time, yes.)

Oh, I am bored like woah. Perhaps I could try and find out if my MMORPGs still work? Do I need the CDs? Where did I put the CDs? Will I have been thrown out of my supergroup? (I suspect so, I haven't played any games properly since before Christmas, hrrm.)

Tori Amos is singing about Butterflies and I can't decide if I love her or I hate her and am very torn. At least it makes a change from Miserere, which has been on repeat for all the time I was writing today for atmosphere. It did not help. Words are still not going properly onto the page, woe.

I think I will have to make self some tea and find a biscuit and read The Sandman, yes. It is a Plan of Goodness.
carmen_lj: (byebye otp)
Stolen from, ah, people and all Doctor Who. Because I have a cold (thank you, Jennifer, it is a lovely gift and I treasure the good it will do my immune system) and am therefore unimaginative. Or something.

Ten Unpopular Doctor Who Fannish Opinions

Teh List )
carmen_lj: (Eeeee! Ian)
Oh, joy! (and unsarcastic joy too, hurrah!) Is there anything better than finding [ profile] prydonianfic on your flist in the morning-ish time? No, I think not. The sheer joy that such a genre exists and everyone who writes for it is Just So Damn Good is causing an alarming amount of chipperness on my part. It's not just the fact that it's a decent subsitute for Master!fic (of which there is an unforgivable lack, hmph) but it's so fun and witty and just...I don't makes me terribly happy anyway. [ profile] wishfulaces wrote No Consideration For Others and it is Wonderful, yes.

Also, a meme, but just cause I was 'tagged' and thus have some vague obligation, or summin'. Perhaps the Internet pixies will get me if I do not fill it out? And what if I fib? I spotted one question where fibbing would be a Good Idea.

Fantastical Four Meme )

Word Count: 3200, so about 800 words behind my self-imposed target, yes. Tut.
carmen_lj: (Eowyn fights)
Stolen from [ profile] slemslempike, [ profile] jekesta and mostly [ profile] tiniago:

Calapine's Fantasy Pirate Crew
using a combo of [ profile] tiniago's and [ profile] jekesta's models, ho hum.

First Mate: Captain Jack Sparrow, for he is an actual pirate and smashing and JOhnny Depp and has a truly fabulous sword, yes. Dude. Also I can steal his ship to be Captian of, yes.

Second Mate: Romana II, for she is terrifically competant and magic and would undoubtedly look marvellous in a swashbucking outfit.

Third Mate: Sir Humphrey Appleby, for he would keep everyone rather organised and stop them from killing me dead, yay.

Cooks (3):

The Second Doctor - he would surely be a wonderful cook, yes? And if not, he would feed us by stealing sandwiches, as he does canonically, tut.

Blake - And his hands which would be cooking, yes. Dude.

Rimmer - Bless 'im, he tries. He was hopeless with the scutters, but he would have a hard light drive on my ship and so meybe he will get better. Also cookery rather than piratry probably better suited to his slightly cowardly nature, yes.

Trusty Crew (12):

Liz Shaw - Cause she Knows Stuff. And has lovely boots. And she would just roll her eyes and other pirates would Run Away. Yes.

Soolin - Cause she is Ace Gunslinger, and we would have guns as well as swords and it would be good if someone knew how to shoot them, yes.

Dr. Marcus Brody - he got lost in his own museum, but he does know ancient Greek and will probably be useful in helping us out with any Cursed Treasure we happen across.

Eowyn - Dude! She is a swordfighter of greatness! She would be a truly great pirate with her skills, yes.

Jessica (sort of Atreides) - she is Wise. And can fight with lots of stuff. And tell when people lie. Excellent. Also could probably ride giant sandworms should we encounter them in the...sea. Ahem.

Dangermouse - Dangermouse! He will be sad without Penfold, but am sure he can live with it, yes.

D'Artagnan - Swordfight fantastique! Though am not sure how great he'd be on a ship.

Talia Winters - To discover sekrit treasure from other pirates, yes.

The Eighth Doctor - For teh Pretteh, ahrrm.

Jamie McCrimmon - Else Two would be sad. Also he would surely be smashing as a pirate.

Storm - No bad weather for us! Oh noes! Yay!

The Mad Hatter - for making us tea, oh yes.

Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing: (according to [ profile] tiniago this is a proper job title and she is Right. How else would we face down unconvincingly fanged vampires and polystyrene menaces, eh? Exactly.) Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Cabin Boys (2):

Bernard Woolley - cause we really need more civil servants to keep things tidy, yes. Also he wil make terrible jokes that will amuse me.
Angus - he looks good as a pirate but am sure he would meybe like the less stressful cabin boy job, yes. *nods*

Surgeon/Doctor: Harry Sullivan, of course. Cause he's only qualified to work on sailors, hurrah! JOY.

Me tooth!

Bulletpoints could save the world:

  • There is another wisdom tooth what has suddenly appeared in my mouth. And it is sore. Just...what? How many of these things are there supposed to be? And since I appear to have run out of gum, where is it going to go? ::frets::

  • are evil. But not for the usual lessons. Was watching telly and reading fic and while gaze was distracted by shiny telly spaceships, I saw a spider - a whacking great terrifying spider - in my peripheral vision. And may have shrieked a little bit. Due tot he Freaking Giant Spider that was crawling across my screen.

But this turns out to be some sort of Sick Advery. Ye gads. It''s a SPIDER. And not a nice cartoon one either, oh no, let's try instead to make it lok as REAL and TRAUMATISING as possible.

  • How many times can one watch The Picard Song before they go mad? I'm also singing it now, which can only be a sign of Terrible Things, yes. Tut.

A procrastination meme, ho hum )
