X-Men - The Last Stand
Oh, I have to write all this down, else I will surely Crumble Into Wee Pieces in Manner of a Biscuit.
Right. Feel much better now. Excellent.
- Yes, this is why I DO NOT read the comics. I couldn't cope with them. All the dying and coming back and dying and ANGST of it all.
- I loved the old cartoon. Why? HAPPY, HAPPY ENDINGS ALL THE TIME. Also no-one dies.
- That said I did love it, but in manner of loving Blake, the episode, in the I am EMOTIONALLY DRAINED thanks to stories made with pictures and sounds way, woe.
- Poor James
MarstersMarsden. Dude, that guy got a shit deal. Sidelined in the last one and killed in the first ten minutes of this one. I mean killed. In the Phoenix Saga. That big story that's supposed to be All About Scott and Jean. DUDE. - So I really really do prefer that gorgeous 8 episode arc in the cartoon that deals with the Phoenix and doesn't sideline Scott into BEING DEAD.
- But we never saw a body, (er, yes, because Phoenix vapourised people but that's NOT THE POINT) or him actually die, so I'm going with The Nile here, oh yeah.
- I did Laugh Inappropriately when I saw Jean's shiny new grave and wondered what they did with the old one. (Or did they just not care that time?)
- Nah, the reason I liked it was that it gave a great finish to all the wee stories. And told a wee shiny story about Warren and his father with hardly any lines at all. Also Frasier was Great.
- Go Storm! The only original X-Man to make it through all three movies ALIVE! She was great in this, she was.
- Poor Rogue, oh, oh, that was so sad, and so right for the movieverse.
- Um, um, oh god, I cried when they killed Xavier, cause I'm rubbish.
- But I sort of knew Scott and Charles were going to die, because I read a very, very negative set report yonks ago and it spoilered those things and I just thought, nah, that's silly. But apart from being Quite Hrrm at the SHEER AWFUL SIDELINING of Scott, I'm okay with it. Especially Xavier's death.
- Because they really did go with the whole Slamming The Morally Ambiguious Stance of The Good Guys Home and I loved that lots. Cause, dude, if nothing else, they're all killers.
- But the Real Reason I loved was because this was pretty much Magneto's movie. He's my favourite character in this 'verse and I was fuming madly at Certain Things in the last movie concerning him, but here I love, oh yes.
- I did get a bit upset about Mystique though (also cheered when they used her real name at last). She saved him. But that meant she died to him. And that was a bit heart-breaking. And then he replaced her with Jean and that made me sad. Though I could not really buy that Mystique would sell them out even if she was abandoned. She wasn't there for money or power, she believed dammit.
- Phoenix's costume was gorgeous.
- And, yes, Magneto - the relationship with Xavier was wonderful. His shout at Jean when he was ripping his friend to shreds; his call to Charles as he went explodey; that anger at Pyro when he said he would have killed Xavier himself.
- Also his powers were neat like woah. And used in shiney ways.
- But when I realised they were either going to Kill or Depower him I got frightened.
- But those last ten seconds made it okay again! He got his powers back! HAPPY JOY DANCING! So, er, yes, I am shallow enough (I refused to read House of Magneto (think that's what it was) despite the nice things said because of the depowering, ahem) that Magneto sort of winning through at the end a bit swung me into Definitely Loving the movie. Ahem. Quite.
- I love how they went with power corrupting in a somewhat subtle way with Pyro, and him becoming pretty much a pyschopathic nutter because he's been given a free reign.
- I don't like Wolverine. I've never liked him. Ever. Thus I have been horribly judgey at how central he is in all the movies and am so glad they gave Storm a nice story here to balance with. The two of them together, I liked a lot.
- Oh, oh, but the real!Jean was still in there and they killed her and OH THE ANGST.
- Pretty shiny effects though. They made me happy.
- As did the whole World Moving On thing from the last movie. Mutants were a threat but there's more acceptance now, they can protest openly, they have a mutant in the, um, Cabinet (?). Shit, I've forgotten what the Americans call it. But that thing, yes. And no-one there treated Hank as anything but a person, and I like that we see these changes, yes.
- Kitty rocked! Yes, a Rogue substitute, as she got sidelined, presumably due to Pretty Useless Powers in the movies but Kitty was just ACE. Much love to her.
- So why did Magneto get his powers back? Was there a cure for the cure? Was the cure only temporary? Does a Massive Overdose make it ineffective?
- And Phoenix got to do something, yay, cause she seemed to pretty much be just be symbolic for ages after KILLING HER MENTOR rather than Unleashing Almighty Powers.
- There didn't seem to be a lot of wasted time, but Wolverine wandering off to get Jean back and not getting to say a word to her seemed like a Bit Of A Waste.
- In conclusion, a fab finish to trilogy and one I am quite happy and only marginally TRAMUATISED with. I may write fic, because of so much shiny to play with. (Though I do expect to read about a whole load of level 5 mutant!sues at ff.net now, yes)
Right. Feel much better now. Excellent.
