Troughton & action figures & series 4

I LOVE PATRICK TROUGHTON.

Possibly that's not news to anyone reading this journal, but I thought I'd say it anyway, since it's true and good and I watched Patrick Troughton in America today (an Exciting Documentary about PT doings cons and interviews in some country or other.) Which was Quite Difficult as I kept pausing it every minute or so because omg, teh squee. A big chunk is the PBS interview in New Jersey, what I've seen before, but there's so much other stuff and it is wonderful and beautiful and HE JUST MADE THE JOKE ABOUT IF THE DOCTOR'S GOT TWO HEARTS WHAT ELSE HAS HE GOT TWO OF? (Doctor Who fandom: stuck in a time loop of cheap lols since 1970.) Also he played the recorder for some fans at a con, O'er The Sea To Skye, I think. I KNOW PIPE BANDS PLAY IT ANYWAYS.

In more (as in additional, not as in greater, cause, really, nothing could be more squeeful than Pat Troughton I think you'll find) squeeful news, the people what make those lovely DW action figures have moved into the classic series. I shall, naturally, be having a quick whine about them not choosing all my favourite things for their first run, but mostly I'm thrilled that possibly maybe I might at some unforeseen time in the future have an ickle Romana and an ickle Eight and I CAN MAKE THEM HOLD THEIR LITTLE PLASTIC HANDS TOGETHER. I assume this is a totally normal want, yes.

Mostly my whining can be summed up with: OH FOR THE LOVE OF HINCHCLIFFE BIAS. In other words, it's bloody Classic Fanboy Opinion that seems to have informed which figures are out first. JOY.

Here's the list:

Dr Who Classic 5” Carded figure Range - Wave 1

1/ The 4th Dr in Red velvet jacket (Circa: Revenge of the Cybermen 1974)
Two interchangeable heads (with and without hat)
NB. this is because removable hats are impossible to do well at this scale

2/ The 5th Doctor (Circa: Resurrection of the Daleks 1984)
Shorter hair version

3/ The 6th Dr in patchwork frock coat (Circa: Attack of the Cybermen 1985)
Early shorter hair version

4/ The Sea Devil (Story: The Sea Devils)
Original version with string vest

5/ Zygon (Story: Terror of the Zygons )
Character - Broton – played by John Woodnut
With Skarassen control device accessory

6/ Voc Robots Twin pack (Story: Robots of Death)
SV-7 (Super Voc) and D-84 (Dum Class)

7/ Magnus Greel and Mr Sin Twin pack (Story: Talons of Weng Chiang)

And while I'm thrilled with the Zygon, they've got three monsters and a Doctor all from the same sodding era, so that's four out of the seven. And that might be the era of the Doctor Everyone Knows Cause of the Scarf (except it's not really, cause it's all Hinchcliffe), but if the only thing you know about DW is The Bloke With The Scarf, you ain't gonna be buying Magnus Greel. (And neither am I, bloody Talons, and its dodgy racial undertones - if you're gonna bring out anything from that great over-rated... thing then bring out a Giant Rat and a tiny, tiny Leela to run away from it. THAT WOULD BE GOOD, YES.)

In their favour, Zygon!, plus Five not with daft long hair (one of the most trivial problems with Four to Doomsday: the Doctor's desperate need for a haircut) and Six looking at his snazziest, cause it's the beginning of his run when his hair was not like some separate blonde lifeform trying to float off the top of his head, yay!

Oh, great is my Action Figure Entitlement (but where's my Troughton and Jamie and Polly?) And though it's just Doctors and monsters for now, I'm hoping that anyone who's bringing out something as niche as a Voc twin pack will realise that an ickle Ace to accompany ickle Seven might possibly sell just as well.

One more thing! The Beeb released the first promo photo of Ten and the new companon along with some details of the next series. Donna looks lovely and I've every confidence it will be awesome sauce as soon as I see her onscreen, but my initial reaction was rather more But I Want My Martha Back Now. And I know she's coming back and she gets to be in that other series and her story isn't over and hopefully they've a satisfying resolution planned (I'm assuming this until I hear otherwise because if I hope she gets a third year, it will be a bit too misery if it doesn't happen) but I really, really loved her. She's up there with ma favourites, dude, and I didn't think that could ever happen with the New Series cause The Nostalgia Factor was just too strong. Martha & Two would be of Teh Awesome, yes.

Oh, me too. I'm sure I'll like Donna lots when I see her again, liked her in "Runaway Bride," but...she's not Martha and I want my Martha back. The weird predilection of the crazier batchippers to express an effusive liking for Donna is not helping matters at all, frankly, either. Also, I'm selfish and need there to be someone around to read my next Ten/Martha before another companion becomes trendier, dammit. (Random shallow moment: David Tennant looks fiiiiiine with mussed-up hair.)

Woo-who!!
Someone else who dunt see s4 as all doom and gloom cos "shouty bird" is in it!

I'm thinking: hmm, she's seeking HIM out cos of weird London shite (then an immediate: oh NOEZ, is London village story AGAIN), then: woah woah woah - Donna and Martha in same TARDIS later on? Bloody marvellous, ROFL

Donna might be ok after all. And I quite LIKED her in xmas special, dude. Her and her full-on 'naughty vengeful god Doctor, no Companion!' mode.

Yes.

I liked Donna lots in Runaway Bride, so I expect to really enjoy her this second time around. I will miss Martha, but I think her character has a better chance of positive development away from the Doctor.

All Hail the Great Trout...and yes - the new promo pic of Donna and Ten and the rest of the casting news looks mighty intriguing ;-)

Donna looks *beautiful*. Suck it, fanboys!

Who's Hinchcliffe?

I, too, winced at Mr Sin. At least he's actually Asian-subcontinent, and not in yellowface like some people I could mention.

I want my Three. Now.

I see the monsters thing as being "Kids who like the new series have bought the DVds of the old series, so we'll make the monsters that are out/will be out on DVD." Although this theory collapses when you get to the Zygons, because they are not out on DVD yet even though they should be.

I have a whole other DVD Entitlement Whine, but it also begins with: "BLOODY HINCHCLIFFE..."

Ahem.

Damn, I love Zygons.

Philip Hinchliffe was the producer from Ark in Space to Talons, that is, he's responsible for the pseudo-gothic era of the show that's so beloved by many an old skool fanboy which is often lauded as The Golden Era and other such overinflated nonsense. (I may have Issues, yo.)

People will still be wanting to read Martha fic for the next FORTY YEARS, dude. I base this on the Highly Skientific Principle that I still want to read about Babs.

Yayes. :-D And there just isn't enough fiction about Babs, a.k.a. Best Human Companion Ever.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2007-08-10 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I...kinda like the Hinchcliffe era. *shamefaced* Though it's no season seventeen, I'll give you that.

[identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com 2007-08-10 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I pour caramel sauce all over myself and wallow in Hinchcliffe.

I think Calapine's just saying it's overpublicized, not that there isn't good stuff happening.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2007-08-10 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she's clearly saying she hates me for liking Hinchcliffian gothy stuff. I'm no fool! *immediately starts the Hinchcliffe Prairie Dog Network in protest*

I might at some unforeseen time in the future have an ickle Romana and an ickle Eight and I CAN MAKE THEM HOLD THEIR LITTLE PLASTIC HANDS TOGETHER.

This is why you = made of win.

I like most of it just fine (Harry!) and Robots of Death is smashing and all, but I get twitchy when it, and its style and themes are held up to be The Epitome Of Classic Who and Everything Else Is Just Wrong.
