The Classic Series vs The New Series

There's a curious discussion going on at teh OG just now (worry not, kids, this is nought to do with shipping or beloved companions) that's a general back and forth snarkorama over whether Classic or New Who is better. The answer, course, is that both are rather smashing and 'betterness' is so ridiculously subjective (and, indeed, Lambert is as different from Letts as Adams is from RTD, that viewing the whole Classic series as single entity is silly anyway) that it's an almost meaningless discussion.

Anyway point is that someone said that no-one who's got into Who through the New Series and then gone onto Classic will prefer the Classic one. So I was curious (and I'm pretty sure at least one person on teh flist has pretty explicitly stated that they do) and will thus discover truth by means of that Ultimate Skientific Test, the LJ poll.

[Poll #1041361]

I have reluctantly provided a cop-out choice. I will Totally Judge You for picking it.

[insert shy wave here] Here via who_daily, I hope you don't mind? I'm another New Who convert who prefers the classic series.

There just seems to be more depth to older stories, and not only because they're longer - some new episodes manage it, but not the majority. There's more focus on plot than characters, but the characters are still interesting, and subtle. Ish. You can make up your own mind about things.

When New Who sucks I get irritated or angry. When Old Who sucks I just think it's rather cute. I can't claim nostalgia, so I've know idea why. Perhaps they're bad in different ways.

Besides, Old Who started with Barbara, New Who started with Rose. Come on, now.

Classic Who all the way, baby! (And I don't see this only because I nearly fell asleep out of sheer boredom while watching the new series episode "42" the other night.) Because New Who has become too much about the Doctor's twu wub 4-eva! and whether he will kiss his companions and be emo over Rose. Whereas in Classic Who, it was perfectly obvious that the Doctor loved Jamie Barbara Nyssa Romana Sarah Jane Nyssa the Brigadier Jo Turlough Peri K9 the TARDIS best, and he didn't need to keep saying it for it to be true. It just was. Subtext rules.

Classic series for me on both counts. But I'm not a DVD-thumping preacher, neither. Overall, I just prefer the show's focal point being, well, funadventure! and (sometimes) practical accessible science, to darkdarkemoROSEMARRTHAAAAHHHdeus ex screwdriver. Whatever floats your... um... kroll. :D

Why choose Classic over New - WHEN YOU CAN HAVE BOTH?

Filthy neutral only because, although I've enjoyed the Classic Series so far, I haven't yet seen enough of it to make a judgment. I expect that it will be one of those dreadful handwavy "I like them both but in different ways" situations.

I had to cop out because of Unique Circumstances: I watched the Classic Series when I was six and hated it. Then I watched the New Series when I was in my teens and loved it. Then I started watching the Classic Series again and loved it even more than the New Series. But since I started out hating it, it all evens out to filthy, filthy neutrality. Woe.

After much hemm'ing and haww'ing, I picked New-schooler (Nine is My Doctor) who likes Old Skool best.

To some extent it's because there's simply MORE of the old school. It's kind of because of the exuberant can-do attitude where they're gonna go to other planets, dangit, even if all they've got is a rock quarry, and they're gonna have giant slugs rather than forehead aliens even if they have to use bubblewrap.

New school has some fabulous episodes, but when classic misses the mark it's worth an eyeroll and a giggle; even then it has a certain charm. When new school misses the mark it does so a bit more spectacularly, in my experience, and makes me want to throw things at the tv.

SO THERE MY REASONS ARE MY OWN. *plans to viciously shortchange modernosity in favor of classicalness for NaNoWriMo*
