River's not perfect. We're just learning her story backwards. I suspect she's something of a con artist. My current theory is that she intended to con the Doctor and, much like Jack, wound up becoming more honorable due to their relationship. I think the roles of smug teasing and having spoilers vs perplexed and trying to keep up will gradually reverse.

Unless her story gets rewritten in the season finale.
