an exciting new low for merlin, oh yay

Well, that was an episode of Merlin that seemed to exist purely to test how many times I can roll my eyes in forty-five minutes.

A list:

  • A Gaius story.

  • Not just a Gaius story, but a Gaius love story, ffs. As if there weren't enough one episode romances last year and this is his second one this year.

  • No Morgana or Gwen, WTF?

  • Arthur only there for Comic Relief.

  • Merlin being a right twit, again. This week he decides to condem a women with magic to death without really knowing what the fuck is going on because she poisoned Uther. And, as we all know, dudes who drown babies in wells must be protected at all cost.

  • Especially if they are women with magicks.

  • My favourite bit was when he claimed he had "no choice" but to tell Arthur about Alice, because that's the most convincing justification ever. Actually, Merlin, you did. You could have chosen not not get her sentenced to death and it would have changed nothing, except you'd look less of a total git.

  • This would all be fine, of course (actually, it wouldn't, any episode that is Mostly Gaius is not okay) if I thought for a moment the writers were deliberately having Merlin make fucked-up choices. But I don't. So it's just all rubbish. Meh. LOTS OF MEH.

On the bright side, next week's can't possibly be this bad, oh yay.

So when I said to myself "Self, should I watch Merlin or should I watch the highlights of the test match on the other channel?" I made the right choice? Good to know.

YES. Should you want to know about the nice watchable bit: Arthur gave Merlin a friendly punch on the arm to cheer him up and it didn't work. There was predictable but amusing banter. It lasted at least TWENTY SECONDS. And then there was Everything Else. Hrmph.
