I'm not sure about the darker Ten either. Somehow the moral authority stuff worked well with the first two Doctors, possibly because they didn't overstate it or really dwell on it. Seeing the second Doctor walk around and shooting Ice Warriors, blowing up the Dominators etc. just seems quaint and natural until you think about it (it's killing people, isn't it?). "There are some corners of the Universe that have bred the most terrible things... they must be fought," sounds better and more convincing than "If you're looking for a higher authority than there is none!" which sounds a bit... y'know.
Still, Tennant's good at mincing. Oh yes.
And, to at least give Trought some context, he was intentionally trying to get Jamie to mistrust him in Evil. Which is still a bit iffy but, y'know. At least he's not an idiot or something. And he did play trains later on. "They're playing a game!!!!!!" Oh blimey yes.
