Not Actually 30 Days of Doctor Who

This was supposed to be done by now, but I am rub, OH WELL.
More exciting words about Doctor Who!
Day 7 - FavoriteEpisode Story
The Time Monster. And I don't love it in an ironic so-bad-it's-good kind of way. There are certainly elements of that (Kronos the flying bird dude is hilarious) but having devoted Whole Minutes to considering this, I think it's my favourite because it's basically my Doctor Who comfort blanket, for it's made of fun and joy but however ridiculous it gets, I still believe in what's going on, bless you actor people. The plot makes so little sense, but I don't care; I adore the characters and the character moments in it are fantastic and in a large for DW regular cast, everyone gets something nifty to do. From the Brig shouting Captain Yates' first name into the walkie-talkie when he thinks he might've been killed (one of Who's best cliffhangers, cause it's a character important enough to care about, but one that it's possible to believe they'd totally kill off), to Benton's not being fooled by the Master, to Jo opting to kill herself and the Doctor to save the universe, to the Doctor's ridiculous tea leaves and pretty much every scene the Master's in, IT'S JUST LOVELY. And I do like the guest characters, Ruth and Stuart get a lot of stick and I'd so be annoyed at having to work with them but onscreen, I enjoy them. And Ruth getting srsly tetchy about sexism? GOOD FOR HER. Because she's a scientist in the seventies working in physics ffs. And the best thing about it is how the writers have written other characters' reactions to her annoyance: Stuart basically agrees with her, the Master patronises her then apologises when challenged, the Doctor treats her with the same respect he treats any non-mad scientist and, OH LOOK, she's perfectly civil in return.
Also, there's a heck of a lot of Doctor/Master stuff in it.
Day 8 - Favorite Series/Season
1-8, 16-17, 26, NW 3, 5 and 6...and probably 12 and 18 as well. I'm allowed 16 favourites, right? Good.
Day 9 - Least FavoriteEpisode Story
I bet it'd be Underworld if I could remember ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Um, s2 had a lot of stuff that made me cringe. Probably Tooth and Claw was the worst of it, cause it started that AWESOME PATH of making the regulars srsly unlikeable, whereas Idiot's Lantern and Fear Her were just dull. (Though Idiot's Lantern did creep me out with its attitude to abusive parents.) I do hate Waters of Mars for being the nadir of telly Doctor characterisation. And Monster of Peladon is boring as get out. And Galaxy 4 is unbearable apart from the lovely chumblies.
If I got to get rid of one, it'd be Waters of Mars.
Day 10 - Favorite Scene/Moment
Aargh! I'm just going to pick one for each Doctor: One and Barbara in the Aztecs arguing about changing history; Two talking about his family to Victoria; Three describing Bessie to the Master; Four's awesome anger at the Captain's collection of shrunken planets; Five yelling "'I'm not going to let you stop me now!" at Stotz; Six realising who the Valeyard really is; Seven's using his faith in his companions to protect him from the Haemovores; Eight and perfectly fitting shoes; Nine's regeneration scene; Ten's horror at River's death; Eleven's glee at realising who River is.
I should do one for each companion too. But that seems like it might take FOREVER.
Day 11 - Scene/Moment that makes you cry
RIVER'S DEATH. I really can't watch it anymore, that is the worst of ALL THE THINGS. I also tend to cry at the The Doctor's Wife, School Reunion, The Big Bang, The War Games, The Green Death, and The Curse of Fenric.
Day 12 - Scene/Moment that makes you giggle
Barbara: "What's that awful noise?"
The Doctor: "I beg your pardon... 'Awful noise'? A good way to talk about my singing!"
Barbara: "No, Doctor, not that awful noise - the other one!"

Date: 2011-10-23 05:49 pm (UTC)I do love IP/SP though. Except the version in my head cuts out the smug laughter at the beginning and Rose's suicide attempt because WTF?! Otherwise, awesome. That should've been Rose's penultimate story as it showcases so much about her, and how she's changed.
I do like the character, just hate her series 2 writing.
Weirdly, though I like her better overall in s1, all my favourite Rose moments are s2.

Date: 2011-10-23 10:54 pm (UTC)BUT IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL.
I've forgotten SO MUCH of Old Who. I need to rewatch it all. There's a project for 2012-13 - finish it all by the 50th anniversary! Or, by my 50th b-day next October! Yes, I'm just a bit less than a year older than DW.
"RIVER'S DEATH. I really can't watch it anymore, that is the worst of ALL THE THINGS"
Being a masochist who loves to cry, I rewatch it. But I keep closing my eyes at Ten's reaction. IT'S ALL TEETH. I just imagine Eleven seeing it and it makes me even more verklempt.
Agreed on Tooth and Claw SO MUCH. I can say definitely that episode was the first one where I thought I might not love Rose. Sadly, it turned into outright dislike at times, and that made me ANGRY. It didn't have to be that way.

Date: 2011-10-24 01:37 pm (UTC)when four yells at him, "But what is it for?" and he sounds so anguished - it's such a great moment. fantastic bit of acting from baker, especially affecting because of how four so often seems slightly detached from everything going on around him. it seems more shocking when his emotions slip out like that.

Date: 2011-10-24 05:39 pm (UTC)It's funny, because I love that episode to pieces, and yet absolutely understand you. I think what I love is that RTD actually followed through on what he'd been setting up... I remember watching it, and my main reaction being 'OMFG they turned 'Handlebars' in an actual episode!' On the flip-side, Rusty BROKE the Doctor. :( (I'm actually working on meta about how RTD broke him and Moffat put him back together. Poor Ten, it wasn't his fault - RTD truly destroyed the very heart of him.)
Day 11 - Scene/Moment that makes you cry
I re-watched just a snippet of FotD the other day (for re-search purposes, haven't watched the episodes in forever. Worry what'll happen when I do), and this bit just really got me:
RIVER (VO)
Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day... Not today.
It's the way she says it. There is just something so... quietly, un-shakeably triumphant in her voice which just gets to me: 'Damn straight My Doctor had a card up his sleeve!'
Did you watch The World Is Not Enough? ('If we can't have it all/then nobody will...' Perfect song is perfect!) Anyway, it truly goes both ways. They can't let each other go. Not even death can stop them trying to save each other.
(You don't mind a random comment turning into shippy meta, right?)

Date: 2011-10-26 11:34 pm (UTC)Oh dear God, yes. Rose and the Doctor being incredibly smug and giggly, even when someone had DIED, and that horrible joke about haemophilia being the same as lycanthropy! Best thing in that episode is Queen Victoria. I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to cheer her on when she tells them off for dealing in the occult and finding it 'fun', but I cheer her on every single time.
