It occurred that I'm being a bit unfair about a thing in Sherlock, cause, yeah, I don't like this version of Moriarty, but I've just remembered I don't actually like any version of Moriarty. The best thing I can say is the conversation between Sherlock and him in the flat in The Final Problem is pretty decent and I don't actively hate that scene in the Brett version but, yeah, I cannot think of a single Moriarty in canon, apocrypha or adaptation who gets better than "well, he was alright, I guess." And I don't know why either - it's not like I don't love other supervillains - and now I'm a bit annoyed at the not knowing, hrmph.

What about Moriarty in Star Trek: the Next Generation?!

I gone from liking to disliking to not caring to sort of liking Moriarty in Sherlock, but I've liked him in other canons more.

Oooh, yeah, THAT Moriarty was a good one. Otherwise I'd be with [livejournal.com profile] calapine, but I'm glad you reminded me about him.

*head-tilty of interested* My favorite is Henry Daniell (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0199787/), from one of the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038259/). He's got a wonderfully snaky, understated style that matches well with Rathbone's Holmes, and I am sadface he was only Moriarty once. (Their other Moriarty, Lionel Atwill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0041172/), was definitely on the "all right, I guess?" level of Moriartiness for me.) Have you seen him?

'Course, I am quite dismissive of book!Moriarty for being so very pastede on yey; he only turns up because Doyle wanted to get rid of Holmes, and then is retconned into "Valley of Fear" by way of... existing beforehand. He's never impressed me as an actual super supervillain, if that makes sense; his evil genius-ness is all tell and no show. I'd vote for Milverton or... um, pretty boy who gets the vitriol thrown at him... ahead of Moriarty.

*sorry, I seem to have written a screed*

Oooh. Do you like Professor Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective? ::curious::

I SECOND THIS. Oh Ratigan. All Moriartys should be cartoon vermin Vincent Price.

This is a very appropriate question, since Basil is still my favorite version of Sherlock Holmes

I was about to say that the only good Moriarty is Patricia Donleavy, but yeah, I'll give TNG props as well.

Omg, you're right! I do love him. And he was my v first Moriarty! So, realy, it's his fault. I judge human Moriartys V BADLY against sentient computer programs, apparently.

Hurrah! Now I feel less silly about liking him best.

The one from Jeremy Brett (Eric Porter?) has a lovely scowl though! How can you hate someone with such a lovely scowl and flapping black cape?

Yeah, the problem with Moriarty is he's such a vague plot device in the original canon who only really gets elaborated in fanfic.

It took me a moment to twig to who you meant: I was like "I'm pretty sure I've never seen a film where Moriarty was a woman, but the name seems familiar, maybe I've seen Patricia Donleavy in some other film? Who else has she played?" Then I remembered.
