Rose the Person

There's a whole bunch of stories I'm meant to be writing just now (finally started Romana-thon thing, and should have something vaguely decent, and, for some mad reason I signed up for three things at [livejournal.com profile] whofest, I've written one, half-finished one and the other is Big Long Plotty Thing, woe) but what I really, really want to write is a nice long Rose fic.

Cause, think Nos pointed this out, yes, she really does seem to get a raw deal in fic, operating as half of a pairing most of the time. And there's a definite lack of fic about Rose the Person, and that's a shame. She's a nice person, y'know. And I like Rose a lot when she's by herself, cause that's when she does Teh Good Stuff. She can think fast, she can organise, she's brave enough, she's a good people person, she's curious and she asks questions. So, yes, I want some nice, long plotty post-Doomsday fic about Rose. Not her moping or thinking about the Doctor and how to get back to him, or even focussing on anything to do with that very much. But about her.

And even telly did that to her most of the time, where she fell into place as Ten's shadow as soon as he appeared and took over, with her just following along quite happily. Hurrah for The Idiot's Lantern! Where I care not a jot that the Actual Practical Benefit of her going and investigating was nought. The point is that She Went, She Investigated, and, yes, she got her face sucked off, but then I think any companion in that situation actually would have ended up Faceless (er, 'cept Romana, for she had her own sonic screwdriver, and maybe Ace would have blown the tellies up...but that's not The Point.)

And Satan Pit is fab for Rose, displaying at once: "Yes, I am good at some stuff! But also, woe, I am sometimes a whiny idiot too!" For the crew would, I believe, have been a bit falling apart without Rose. They might be all experienced at the Space Stuff, but she's the one who's used to dealing with Scary-Weird Alien Threats. And they were the sensible people who said, "The Doctor's dead, let us leave," while she was a bit daft. This makes me happy, she does silly things, people acknowledge that they are silly (oh, I forgot about that for ages, but, dude, the crew are so "WTF are you on?" with her Mad Insistence on staying and it is Great.

I'd add in stuff about Rose in Fear Her here, but I've only seen it the once, and I cannae remember exactly what she did, but I know there were Darn Fine Rose bits in there somewhere.

So, yes, SP for the Win for Rose. And, more Rose-as-Person-In-Her-Own-Right would be A Good Thing.

Dude, yes. And the alt-world has so much possibility: are the Krillianites there with their godmaker? What about UNIT? And all the LINDA people? And how's Rose coping with having her-dad-but-not-really in her life, and no longer being her mum's only family? Also I have this urge for Rose and Jake to be Best Friends Forever

Yes! That's all the sort of thing I would love to play with (or read, yes), and there is just So Much Possibility it are shiny as Anything. Ye, it is pretty much all the fic is pretty much about Finding the Doctor (which, yes, makes sense and such, but I'm now at stage of Sort Of Hoping that something else will turn up) and that makes me a bit sad.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone's emo at the moment. Eventually there will be humour and adventure fic and some form of Rose gen ficathon, I hope.

As creator of the Rose comm, I sort of feel like I should also run a Rose gen ficathon to promote it and get more fic, but...I just don't have the energy to run another ficathon right now. I'd sign up if someone else did it, though...

I'd be willing to run one/do the admin of one, only

a)I wouldn't participate myself, as I'm not really a writer. And I don't know is this is NOT DONE.
b)Because I'm not a writer, I don't know whether my name would carry enough weight to get people involved. (Although I don't really know how much the name running the ficathon matters)

[identity profile] livii.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be happy to "co-run" it with you, in that I could put my name on it but probably let you do most of the work...I don't know how far my name goes either though, but we could bill it as an official "rose_lives" ficathon, or something.

I think it's fine for you to not participate, being the mod of these things is a fair bit of work itself.

Feel free to email me if you want to chat, email's in my profile. I might be able to help do the actual showrunning more starting next week.

Well, I'm definitely all for more Rose gen. And more Rose/anyone-not-the-Doctor too, for then she would also get to do more stuff herself.

Rose/Sarah! Rose/Mickey! (Though I seem to have firmly placed Mickey/Jake in my own personal canon, so it'd have to be Rose/Mickey/Jake) An AU of the end of The Satan Pit so I could have Rose/Zach or Rose/Ida!

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I still want pre-Doctor Rose/Mickey. All the others are good too. Rose/Mickey/Jake could be well fun.

I love Ida hardcore. "But I don't want to die on my own" is the best single line-reading in the whole season, IMHO. I need to rewatch those episodes so I can write Zach-and-Ida-as-companions.

I did find the falling-apart for everyone else in Satan Pit a bit contrived, though, as though 'twere not so much consistent with characters as purely done to make them crap so Rose could out-competent them. That worried me a bit.

[identity profile] calapine.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sort of buy it as they've all been out there for ages, cut-off from civ, leading a daily routine, stuck in v dangerous situation and then suddenly there's stuff that I will totally assume is Completely Out Of Their Experience and they're in a bit of shock about it all. And that's Rose's everyday life so she can adapt a bit better.

It ain't ideal, but, as Rose spends so much time being ShadowPerson in series 2, I cut lots of ye olde slack.

[identity profile] lilly-rose.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)

If Kat keeps kicking my ass about it, I'll write it. *g Cause Rose and Janine would get on like a house on fire I'm thinking.

And a change of country might be good for Rose; she has no basis of comparison for small, cultural things in an alt America. So that might help her adjustment a little more, at least at the start.

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)

I should, yes. I had a bunny for a sequel to 'Any Other Name', but couldn't find the plot that went with. Alas, it turned out to be a dust bunny.

Also, I still owe other fic and am not finding time to finish them. I think I possibly should, before I begin more.

I think that if I were a Rose fan, I would be highly disappointed, both by fanon and canon. She's not particularly well-served by season 2, and there is such a lack of stories focussing on her as an individual, and not as a part of a-pairing-with-a-smooshed-name. The piece with the most Rose backstory I've read was one by [livejournal.com profile] livii, and that was about Shareen.

I am not considering writing Rose/Mickey, Mickey/Jake, Rose/work post-Doomsday, about all three of them moving on and dealing with the world in front of them. And if I were, there would not be liberal heapings of Jackie. no.

[identity profile] calapine.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm more disappointed in fanon, as I expect canon to be, mostly, about the Doctor. Though, in retrospect, Rose wasn't as overshadowing in series one as I'd thought at the time and now, with two series to look at, I think that they did get the balance right there.

Just, with so many ardent Rose fen, I'd have thought there'd have been some Rose focussed gen around and there just isn't.

Glancing at my previous post, I didn't separate my points as clearly as I perhaps should have. I don't think that canon should have given us yet more Rose -- it's just that I feel at times as if her S2 arc was almost a reversal of growth. I'm not sure if I liked S1 or S2 better, but I did prefer S1 Rose. *is a bad person*

Just, with so many ardent Rose fen, I'd have thought there'd have been some Rose focussed gen around and there just isn't.

It seems to me as if there isn't too terribly much character-introspective gen of any sorty floating around these days. It just surprises me (much) more with the volume of Rose fen, though.

Perhaps I am mistaken, though, as I don't really consider myself In Fandom.

Aye, fair point really.

And, yes, would have thought numbers would mean at least a handful of Rose centered fics, but fandom's still in post-Doomsday recovery. And I'm being rubbish and impatient because I'm awful blase about companions leaving.

I feel that I've a bit that way myself -- I have just come into Who, but I've been acquainting myself with the (sometimes crack-tastic) joy of the old series, and I can't quite get myself too worked up over people leaving.

I think it's possible that what fandom needs is a character-driven gen ficathon. Or ficathon where past companions get on with their lives, and are content.

Err, perhaps that's just me.

Oooh. I have not seen that one yet, having had really no idea where to start with the Jo and Liz stuff. I shall have to see about acquiring it.

This is encouragement, yes? But the question is, which one? I think I would love more dearly to see past companions getting on with their lives, but a general gen one might have a bit wider of an appeal.

Coming in late to the party -- very, way late to the party. I share your love for Rose-the-person.

I'd really love to write/read a long plotty fic about Rose-the-person/detective running around with her wanderlust and occasional pining for the stars. Also, I hold it to my personal belief that Alt!Torchwood is far, far more competent than Torchwood 3 and is working *with* UNIT.

I'd very much think that Rose would step up to the plate as Earth Defender as soon as she realizes that there really is no Doctor equivalent in this world and incorporates most of the Doctor's seat-of-the pants bluff my way through this diplomacy. With her quite practical 'Spock' tech approach and very own formidable detecting skills.

She won't be *perfect* of course, is why she'd have Mickey and Jake along in her team and she'd fall as much as she'll stand-up again but in the end she'll realize she does love this saving-the-world bit as much as she did when she was with the Doctor.

Only, I'm quite daunted with the prospect of doing it. But, yes, Rose-the-person FTW!

I wish she'd stayed for S3 -- I think the plots for S3 would be better suited for Rose since its seems the upcoming plots are quite dark, which seemed to suit her fine when she was with Nine.

Aye, I agree wit all that, save the last, and like to think those things. What I would have loved and would have made me a tad happier would be us getting a hint of it by show rather than an offhand "working for Torchwood now" comment.

But, for me, Rose had her run. The character was strip-mined and there was nothing new to discover about her or anywhere else for her to go. I definitely think it was the right time for her to go; I'd just have preferred that a slightly bigger hint was given to the audience that she was doing well in her new life.
