Nano is clearly going BRILLIANTLY and by brilliantly I mean that I'm not really sure how many words I'm supposed to have but I really, really don't have that many. I went to read about how the feck horses work and got distracted by Christine de Pizan who's now my new favourite historical person ever.

Um, um.... I've no idea what I was going to post about...Yuletide! That was it. I signed up for that. Something I haven't done for a few years due to failing at ficathons. However, I'm feeling optimistic, so optimistic, in fact, that I signed for Able To Write rather more fandoms than usual. Generally I stick to the minimum because of The Terror, but this year I scrolled through the list until I got bored (it's a bloody long list, yo) and just clicked the things I knew reasonably well. Which included Monkey Island. So now I'm REALLY HOPING no-one requests Monkey Island fic or I shall have to go and kill them. With a demonic skull.

Mostly I wish for for lots of Merlin that has Uther in it. I found good Merlin fic! It was dead exciting. It even had Uther innit, but it was not really about Uther. And at some point I did just give up any issues I had about Plot or Sense and admit to myself I am perfectly in love with the show and Giles and really much as I get glee from the four young uns (and I do think they're all quite a bit good), I'm in it for Giles and he's going to DIE because he's Uther and probably it's okay to make Gwen a blacksmith's daughter but making Uther live and have lots of shiny adventures is OUT OF THE QUESTION. Boo.

So, yes, my constant fear every Saturday is that Uther will die and I will be sad. Alas, the fandom seems to have v little interest in Uther, but at least there be more Morgana fic turning up now, hurrah.

And more Star Trek pictures appeared on me flist and that was great even though it means me flailing a bit about Star Trek and I tend to hide my Trekkiness and I don't know why, but, um, yes, anyway. I am Quite A Bit Excited about the movie. Mostly because, omg, Romulans! I love Romulans, I do, and not just Diane Duane's. But much as Trek make me love them, it then tends to spend most of its time trying to convince me they are rubbish. They were wonderful in the original series, and then Next Gen was dead good in season three with The Defector and that other one that had G'Kar innit and then the rest of the time they were a bit rotten. Apart from The Chase, cause that gleefully implied that the Federation and Klingons and Cardassians were a bit daft and the Romulans weren't cause they just let everyone else run around silly while they waited for them to turn up at the end. And the Romulans weren't Zomg!Evils about it either but had a nice sensible chat with Picard. And there was Senator Cretak in DS9 for a few episodes and she was awesome even though Weyoun did get a horrible, horrible line about "Romulans - they're so predictably treacherous." OH WHATEVS. Even if that did keep happening all the time in STUPID STUPID WAYS.

Worst of all though, I was promised Romulans as the Big Bad of the last TNG movie. And it was an even number so, really, I had EVERY REASON to assume it would be better than Insurrection, and it wasn't. It was awful, probably the most awful of them all. I mean, Ambassador Neral had more personality than all the Romulans and Remans and other nonsense in Nemesis put together and he had ONE BLOODY LINE in STVI.

So, um, yes. I am hoping for some shiny Romulan-ness in this new Trek movie. And, y'know, for the new cast not to be dreadful. But I'd totally settle for the first thing. Ahem.

They are probably too continuity-obsessed to put Romulans in it, though, what with the whole "OMG Spock you look like a Romulan and no one knew" thing from that episode that starts with the shipboard marriage just so that we can know how totally doomed at least one of them is.

Which would be sad, because Romulans are win. (IMO the problem with the later TNG Romulans is that they made it all about alt-Tasha's secret time-travel daughter because Denise Crosby wanted to come back for a bit. But S3 Romulans were awesome. And I liked them in that DS9 where O'Brien is jumping in time the whole time.)

Eric Bana is playing a Romulan though! I am almost certain he is.

The jumping in time Romulans make me sad. THEY HAVE NO PERSONALITIES.

I did not know that. That is quite exciting.

Apparently it is a cameo. So maybe he doesn't interact with any of the regulars?

I didn't know it was a cameo. OH PHOOEY. But even, they probably won't do anything AWFUL if they are not innit much.

i looooove "balance of terror" and mark lenard is the best Romulan Commander ever. although the gal from "the enterprise incident" is sexay and everyone must enjoy how she spends the episode eye-fucking the hell out of spock. but yes, balance of terror and military intrigue and intelligence and hints at weirdness of vulcan culture and dealing with racism in a believable manner and the future is just as complicated as now, but different. yes!

Oooh, Monkey Island fic! I wish someone would write Monkey Island fic so that some would exist. But demonic skulls are not nice, so. Except for the ones that are.

I'm kind of anxious about the Trek movie. I think it might suck, and I don't want it to suck.

Plus, I love the old arc in the movies best.

i had sudden thought of, "hmm... i wonder if they will address spock and his issues with his dad and his culture. eh, probably not. wait, what am i thinking -- prefabricated angst right there! does that mean there will be... sarek? *searches* IT DOES OMG."

omg there is also george kirk! argh stop making me want to see this movie, cast list! wait... karl urban is playing mccoy? um.... ok, there goes a little bit of the wanting to see the movie. now i feel more normal. okay.

i would be very happy if there was lots of stuff about the war the federation had already had with the romulans and how all the other characters were like, "dang those romulans are mysterious" and the vulcans were all shifty-eyed. oh damn i got myself excited again! >___

The Star Trek movie is going to end in tears. But I'm getting stupid excited for it anyway. Because I am a Trekkie, and it's what we do.

I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm looking forward to Star Trek Online even more, which is sad, because then I'll be addicted to both it and City of Heroes... ;)

Zomg, does this mean I can bully you into reading my Alt!Tasha/Volskiar ickle 'shipfic? (You know, that dreadful general from Vulcan's Heart - which is not by Diane Duane). My beta reader says it's quite good so far, in that horrifying roald dahl sort of way where you're laughing and rooting for something you know is horrid and wrong, and I crammed every so many standard romance novel cliches in there as I could. It's lovely. I'm sure it is.

But yes, I hope the Romulans are clever in that serious but we'll kill you would you like some ale? way in this next movie. While I'll grant that Donatra was lollerskates in Nemesis, it was... a bad movie.
