I think all of these things are lovely:

1 - Lara Pulver has been cast as Irene Adler in Sherlock which is Most Awfully Pleasing. I love her. And that is based ENTIRELY on Robin Hood, the rubbish BBC tv series. She was the single really good thing about season three, and I also see she's going to be in the next season of Spooks, so it is a DOUBLE WIN.

2 - I keep being EVER MORE APPALLED at my fangirlishness at Nicolaj Coster-Waldau. I mean look at him being all lovely and enthusiastic and funny and stuff. I also feel like I'm cheating somehow because I care very little about Jaime in the books but I really don't want Bad Things to happen to him on the telly. And not just cause I can actually see how pretty he is. REALLY NOT JUST CAUSE OF THAT. There is a humour and charisma on the screen that is tots lacking in the prose for me. (And it's the other way round for Jon - book!Jon is my favourite dude and on the telly he is just too emoface and ho hum.)

3 - I am now going to talk about Thundercats a TINY BIT. They have rebooted my second most beloved cartoon* and naturally I was HORRIFIED for clearly this was all about Ruining My Childhood even more than those horrid He-man remakes, but no! As it turns out, despite the lack of the Greatest Of All Theme Tunes, it's pretty good. And they seem to have decided their core audience is, in fact, those people with fond childhood memories of a cartoon designed to sell toys.

  • It looks great. The big scene setting shots of stuff are beautiful. Lion-o looks...anime? I know sod all about anime, so naturally this confused and frightened me but I got over it pretty quickly. The Thundercats palace looks like the classic Cat's Lair, the Thundercats symbol is all over the place, the logo is the original logo, more or less, and the Sword of Omens looks like the Sword of Omens. ALL THIS MADE ME VERY GLEEFUL.

  • Even better, some of the sound cues: the Sword of Omens sounds EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD.

  • Tigra and Cheetara when they do fighting things, it brings back ALL THE JOY of watching this when I was four or five or whatever. They were my favourite dudes.

  • For some bizarre reason, the writer sorts for this version seem to have, like, applied some thought to the mythology and backstory, trying to make it have a bit more logic and sense. I fear this new version may be very lacking in the robot teddy bears.

  • So the Thundercats are are an imperialist civilisation who have taken all the good stuff by force of arms while all the other animal dudes are like "those cats are imperialist gits and we're starving, we really hate them, let's take them down, yay." And not only are the lizard dudes perfectly justified, they are actually competent. Slythe is a general and does a Trojan horse on them foolish cats. That was lovely. Well done, Slythe.

  • Unfortunately lizard dudes have also teamed up with ULTIMATE EVIL though they don't seem to have noticed that. Sadly, whilst Mummra's first appearance is suitably awesome, the bonechilling terror of the original is absent. Also, it tots didn't help that I found out he was voiced by Byron offa Babylon 5.

  • Original Lion-o voice dude is Lion-o's father though! That was cool. Also Panthro is Jolee Bindo from KotoR. And that is all the voice artists I recognised.

  • WHERE IS MUMMRA'S PYRAMID? I'm not took keen on him doing stuff either. What's that all about? SIT IT YOUR SARCOPHAGUS AND DO SOD ALL DARN IT.

  • There is a traitor dude who has totally overdosed on the hubris. "I got nothing out of it" indeed. Yes, nothing apart from being CHIEF GENERAL DUDE.

  • Snarf is no longer the nanny, nor does he speak, or even say "snarf, snarf." This saddens me.

  • So there's this big battle, which is totally like Lord of the Rings, if the Gondor lot were cat people and the Mordor dudes were lizardmen who'd done a deal with Darth Vader to get some AT-AT walkers and then the Gondor dudes had found some Jedi. Mmm, completey sense-making epicness.

  • This is a smashing thing I found on Youtube. A fan-edited opening to the new cartoon with the eighties theme tune.

*most beloved, and best, is She-ra. Obviously.

Thundercats, ho!!!

I was watching the original series not that long ago, but my supplier got kicked from youtube. Bah. And I bought a slightly-less-crap mobile so that I could use the Thundertank theme as a ringtone, but I can't get it to talk to my computer so that hasn't happened yet.

omg, I just watched that vid, they look so wrong! I like Cheetara, though. But where's Panthro? Does he not get to be in the trailer, or does he look so different I missed him?

Panthro isn't really in the opener, but will turn up later.

omg, I just watched that vid, they look so wrong!

I KNOW! But I totally got used to it. It does feel very much like it's being aimed at the people who have the eighties nostalgia.

Unpopular opinions ahoy!

OH THANK GOD. I don't even really LIKE Sherlock, but I've been weirdly invested in the Irene Adler casting because I know that the Internet is going to hate her regardless and if it were an actress I really liked, I'd be pissed off about it. But since I have never heard of this lady, I won't feel particularly obligated to defend her when the show isn't really worth it to me.

Yeah, I am SLIGHTLY APPREHENSIVE of what fandom will be like especially cause Holmes/Adler interests me way more than Holmes/Watson. (I tots love the slashiness of the RDJ movie, but even more I love it all went very OT3 and Irene has such a large part.)

I think I heard somewhere that one of the big Japanese studios is doing the animation, so maybe that's why it looks anime-ish?

Also, even though the theme song isn't in the show I've been singing it since I saw the episode. Apparently just the word "Thundercats" is enough to trigger it. I should possibly be worried about what that says about me, but I'm enjoying it too much right now to care. *wanders off humming*

*sigh* Why can no one ever remember that Irene Adler in original Holmesian canon was American? :-\ (Rachel McAdams doesn't count, because that was NOT Sherlock Holmes, no matter what they called it. *g*)

Huh. I am clearly watching the wrong Sherlock Holmes adaptations. Well, when it comes to Irene Adler, anyway. ;-) In the Granada series (which is awesome in every other respect!), she was English. In the Matt Frewer movies (which are probably even less canonical than the RDJ movie, if that's possible) she was Czech...*trying to think if I've seen her in anything else*.

Oh well. It's not a huge deal. I was just hoping. :-)

That said, I'd rather have a good English actress play the role than a bad American one, or someone non-American trying and failing to do an American accent. And it sounds like (from your enthusiasm) the former is what we're getting? :-)

Ok, why do I not have a Poirot icon?! (And by that, I mean of course an icon of David Suchet as Poirot. :D)

Also, I wonder if they'll remember that she's an opera singer?

Date: 2011-08-04 01:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com
That I don't care as much about. :-) In fact, in a modern AU I think it would be fun to have her be a pop singer or a West End performer instead. *g*

(And yes, Suchet is pretty much the definitive version, isn't he? :-) )

I remember her being American in the Granada series, so possibly my memory is NOT TO BE TRUSTED HERE. She was an American in a TOP NOTCH Peter Cushing telly movie in the eighties and another AWESOME (I mean these both affectionately, they are not great but I kinda love them) Christopher Lee one.

And it sounds like (from your enthusiasm) the former is what we're getting? :-)

I've no idea. I am assuming that she'll be American, yeah, regardless of the actress's nationality.

I will have to check out the Cushing/Lee versions! Brett is my definitive Holmes (although Cumberbatch does a mighty fine job too *g*) but I haven't yet found my definitive Irene Adler. :-)

Well...onscreen anyway. I'm madly in love with the more three-dimensional Irene in Carole Nelson Douglass's Sherlock Holmes fanfiction novels, which could be why I tend to have a "NOT GOOD ENOUGH" reaction to most screen versions. *sheepish*

I've no idea. I am assuming that she'll be American, yeah, regardless of the actress's nationality.

Oh. Sorry, what I meant to say was that based on your reaction, at least it's a *good* actress in the role, which, admittedly, is better than a bad American one any day. ;-) (So: 1st choice - good American actress, 2nd choice - good British actress, 3rd choice - good actress of any other nationality, last choice - bad actress of any nationality. *g*)

Cushing is mine. Not that eighties Cushing, proper Cushing telly series.

Can I blame my appalling reading comprehension on the hour? It was past midnight and stuff, yes. Ahem.

But yes! I do think she'll be good.

I've been a fan of Nicolaj since the very short lived tv show New Amsterdam so I'm thrilled he's doing so well in Game of Thrones. Even if my love for him does leave me conflicted since Jamie... um yeah.
